A Look Back: The Tony’s
Hello! This is my first post and I am so excited to be here with y’all.
Tonight Stephen and the “Company” cast will reprise their recent performance in April on the 2011 Tony Awards, which is being hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.
Unfortunately, Stephen didn’t do anything to garner himself a nomination this year, but it will be great to see him on the Tony Awards, with the truly awesome cast that comprised the brief but wonderful “Company” revival.
I know some of you Hubsters are big musical theater people; what would you think Stephen’s next theater turn should be? Are you excited for any particular nominees to win big? Karenatasha informed us that Stephen basically said he was theatered-out for now, but let’s choose to ignore that and comment up.

Welcome to Colbert News Hub, colbertnewshelper! And thanks for this awesome post! I especially enjoyed the videos (had already seen all of them except for that very last one, which is a jewel)!
Oh man, being a major musical theatre geek/nerd (and since I’m still disappointed about missing Company in every form of viewing it (yes I know that I’ve said that quite a few times…I understand if anyone is annoyed with me)), I’m game with any play or musical that Stephen gets asked to perform in. Sondheim, Hammerstein, JRB, anything. I can see him in so many roles, from supporting (i.e. Reverend Shaw Moore from Footloose) to leading (maybe Leo Frank from Parade or Harold Hill from The Music Man). Or he could even do a song cycle like Elegies or Edges (which, like Company, is just a collection of songs that center around a certain theme), since those are small productions and can be done in an intimate setting. I think that the ultimate win would be for him to perform in his absolute favourite musical (I think I’m correct but do tell me if I’m wrong): Sunday In The Park With George (I know it was done 5 years ago, so it’s probably got some more years to go by before it can be re-done again). Seriously, he can rock a beard and from what I saw in a TCR interview with Aaron Sorkin, he really captured the expressions and intonations of the character George (Sondheim would be so proud). I’d also like to see him in more plays, though which ones I don’t know, musicals are more my forte and the ones I saw in college were…kinky and avant-garde, is as best as I can describe it (wouldn’t say no to Shakespeare, though). God, just ANYTHING will do, and I will make sure that I will be around and will have enough money then to splurge on a ticket. Maybe even…God willing…I could share the stage with him someday…but I know that it’s dangerous to let your dreams go to your head and that you need to be realistic. But one can always look at the stars even if you’ll never reach them, right (I understand if no one understands what I mean)?
As for the Tonys, I’m fine with whoever wins, although I guess I hope that Book of Mormon wins something since I’ve heard good things about it and it’ll be interesting to hear Daniel Radcliffe actually sing (I’ve heard it’s good, but not strong enough to project throughout an entire theatre even with a microphone) when I actually get back to watch it on the TiVo.

@ Anais I was fortunate enough also to see Book of Mormon. If Daniel Radcliffe is the lead guy, then he projected well when I saw him in April. The whole show is a monstrosity of absurd fun, and the music was quite good. It was a little blasphemous at points, which was hard on my poor little Catholic self, but overall quite good, and I hope it wins big (it will win big:)
I’d like to see him in something where he is more a romantic or dramatic lead. In Company he is the funny sidekick guy, and he rocks it (as you will see when you get to see the movie), but if he were younger, he could do NPH’s part no problem.

That’s true. I’d also like to see him in a romantic or dramatic role, although coupled with the fact that he’s such a fantastic actor and I have a problem of being overcome by my emotions, I feel that seeing him in (staged) grief or doing anything (staged) romantic with a female perfomer would do me in (since in the first situation I’d be in a puddle and would want to give him a big hug and in the second situation I’d keep fervently wishing that I was in that lucky woman’s place, like Martha Plimpton). But if the opportunity for him to do those roles does arise, I won’t say no to seeing him (unless I’m broke). I have a feeling Book of Mormon will do well (it’s up for 14 Tonys after all, it should win a few), and I’m happy to hear that you thought that Dan did well in his role (after hearing what the critics had to say, but then again I don’t listen to the reviews, I go see a show regardless of what is said, unless it’s Spiderman).

I’m confused. Daniel Radcliffe in The Book of Mormon? As in Harry Potter?

Daniel Radcliffe was in “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” (Yes, Harry Potter.) I hope to see The Book of Mormon one of these days, but the cost is somewhat prohibitive at the moment… But I’ll start hinting around about what a great birthday present it would make. (My husband can start thinking about September.)
I’d see Stephen in anything he chose to do theatrically — and I remember having a discussion about this on NFZ and saying what a great “Harold Hill” he’d make. Oh, he was really born for that role. Romantic and funny and articulate all rolled into one. But truth be told, I’d love to see him do some really serious drama.

I really think Stephen can play any kind of role whether comic or serious. I was really impressed during the
Company number last night with the way he was inhabiting the character every second. Perhaps a character/play that resonates with him personally would be nice.
