Oh that was fantastic and perfect. What a lucky group of grads. I had a hellish day and that just brightened me right up.
That story about him getting an ominous note from the Dean in place of his diploma made me anxious just thinging about it. How nerve wracking that must have been. D:
This was such an inspiring speech and it doesn’t hurt that he can pull off those bright purple robes.
One of my very good friends is a professor at NU, so I’m hoping to get a “repor” of the day.
A very funny and very thought-provoking speech all wrapped in one delicious verbal taco. On a more serious note, his speech really hit home for me. I’ve been reconsidering my plans for the future the past few weeks, and his speech kinda reassured me in a way. Very good speech, I’m saving it somewhere so I can rewatch it whenever I get stressed out about the future again.
That was wonderful! I especially loved the “meaningful” part of the speech. I loved how he talked about not being the most important person in the room. If I’m not mistaken, I think that’s what a lot of us absolutely love about him. Or at least one of the things. And not coincidentally, he can get away with poking fun at people who consider themselves “important,” precisely because he considers everyone important. And his fangirls and fanguys love him for it. Or at least I know I do. And I suspect I’m not alone.

Oh, and I forgot to say that I loved the woman behind Stephen who at one point during the speech was covering her face because she was laughing so hard. You could just tell that she’s probably a professor and is used to being all serious and didn’t want to be caught giggling. A fangirl is born.
I was told by my “spies” at NU that the funniest part of Colbert’s appearance wasn’t during his address but during his hooding beforehand. Apparently when Provost Linzer was introducing Stephen, he said Stephen was the Executive Producer and Host of the Colbert ReporT. The soon-to-be graduates in Ryan Stadium started to make a ruckus over the mistake (it was pretty loud). While the Provost tried to figure out what he had said that was wrong, Stephen got up, took off his tam, and started marching off stage. The students, of course, applauded Stephen’s act. Fortunately, someone leaned over to the Provost and told him it was the “Re-por” and with the corrected pronunciation, Stephen returned for his hood.
That was such a beautiful, funny and inspiring speech. The kids and officials were absolutely loving it (especially that one woman with the sunglasses and laughing uncontrollably behind her hand, I think everyone noticed that). The meaningful part of the speech also really hit close to home for me. For a while I’ve been worried about the future, not knowing what to do (and what I want), where to go and being uncertain of what will happen, and how I will “improv” when the time comes. I’ve also had some self-doubts about my own possibly “stupid” dreams which have been nagging me for ages. But Stephen somehow soothed my mind, lessened my fear, and at least made me more calm and clear-minded…for now (still better than nothing). I still may not know what will come, but Stephen’s words of wisdom could not have come at a better time for me, and I reminded once again of why, like many others, I love him so much. I wish that he had been the main speaker at my graduation at UR two years ago (we had Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, who was good but not spectacular), but that’s why I thank God for Youtube so to be able to hear this invaluable advice even though I’m no longer a college student. I’ve already downloaded this video for future reference and for whenever I need a boost and to banish the “vampires” of self-doubt, and anyone who’s ever felt this way should do the same if they can.
What a joy that was to listen to and watch. One of the best moments of the speech for me was actually right after Stephen said his “At a minute or two til two” and you could hear one of the graduates say when the camera cut to her, “Oh my God, that’s amazing.”
As far as the speech itself, he continues to surprise and amaze me with how eloquently he speaks. He has this absolutely beautiful way of describing things, especially common ideas and phrases. When he said “service is love made visible,” I had to pause the video, the sentence was so gorgeous. And he always speaks with such honesty in his voice; how could you not be inspired by him?
This was exactly what I needed to hear today, thank you. 🙂
