Colbert May Get FEC Exemption To Launch SuperPac.

Comedian Stephen Colbert’s plan to launch a “SuperPac” moved one step closer to reality today, as the Federal Election Commission issued a pair of draft opinions allowing him to use his TV show’s resources to promote the group.

The Comedy Central star has been awaiting the FEC’s ruling on whether he could plug his group, “Colbert SuperPac” on the air under the “media exemption” to federal campaign finance law.

Regardless of which draft opinion is adopted, Colbert would be allowed to create his SuperPac and use his show’s resources to produce advertisements for the Committee as long as they are only used on the show, without parent company Viacom being required to reveal its donations to political campaigns.

The FEC drafts conflict over whether Viacom would have to disclose work its employees did on the SuperPac that are not explicitly for the broadcast.

The commission’s ruling in this case has the potential to tear down the boundaries between entertainment and politics on TV. The FEC’s ruling would also apply to any other media personality looking to promote independent expenditure groups on TV, for instance Karl Rove .

The FEC is accepting comments on the drafts until this upcoming Tuesday. The full commission will then consider them at its meeting on June 30.

White House Says No to ‘Colbert Report’ Naturalization Ceremony

Proving that Stephen Colbert makes people at the highest levels of government a little nervous, the White House has nixed a plan by “The Colbert Report” to feature an on-air naturalization ceremony for new U.S. citizens, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

The show had hoped to feature the ceremony next Tuesday to coincide with a guest appearance by Alexandra Pelosi, whose new documentary, “Citizen U.S.A.: A 50 State Road Trip,” debuts on HBO on July 4.

Reached for comment, Alexandra said: “The government just doesn’t get it. ‘The Colbert Report’ is what America watches. This is Colbert Nation.”

In a statement, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which is part of Homeland Security, suggested the decision was because of the logistics of fitting the ceremony into the half-hour talk show.

“The government made a unified decision to refrain from formatting a naturalization ceremony for a television show,” press secretary Chris Bentley said. “We did so to ensure that the qualities of the ceremony are not impaired in any way. Our naturalization ceremonies remain open to the public.”

The finish to our Music Week, Stephen brings down the house with his new sure-to-be hit, “Charlene II (I’m Over You).” It is so great that Stephen is using his attempt to revive his 80s splendor by also attempting to address an interesting issue: the digitization of the music industry itself. I don’t know about you, but I am so getting a copy of the new vinyl (preferably the red, white, and blue one.) Now I just have to buy a record player!
