Who’s Not Honouring Stephen Now? – The Critics Choice Television Awards.

Who's Not Honouring Stephen Now
Stephen has been snubbed by the first ever Critics’ Choice Television Awards in the “Best Talk Show” category. Let’s hope this is not an indication of things to come.

BEST TALK SHOW:
“Chelsea Lately”
“The Daily Show”
“The Ellen DeGeneres Show”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
“The Oprah Winfrey Show”

The Critics’ Choice TV Awards will be streamed live June 20 by VH1.com and shown multiple times in edited format later on Reelz Channel starting June 22 at 8 p.m. ET.

“Chelsea Lately?” Seriously? They picked that over The Colbert Report? SIGH.

It’s probably just as well. The nominees are up against Oprah, and from what I understand, you wouldn’t like her when she’s angry.

Hmmm. Strictly speaking, I’m not sure that Stephen’s show falls correctly under “talk show.” I think that because he’s in character, it’s really a “comedy” show. No attempt is (usually) made to have an honest conversation between the real Stephen and whomever his guest is. (Not that I wouldn’t love it if he did just that.) I wonder if, because so many of his fans (myself included) feel that he’s speaking for us, or to us, about issues that matter to us, we may feel that the first goal of the show is not comedy — but it is. I don’t see any reason for Stephen to be offended at all. In fact, if there’s a perception that the show is not a talk show, I think that’s a good thing. That means people get it. No? Well, that was my first thought anyway. Incidentally, was there a comedy award being given? Because if he didn’t get nominated for THAT, I’d be insulted.
And truthfully (one more thing), if Jon and Stephen weren’t in the same category every year at the Emmys, I think Stephen would have won several times. I think they strove to make the shows very different. And they succeeded, I think.
(*waits for storm of disagreement, with head under desk*)

You won’t get a wave of disagreement from me, as I actually agree with you. 🙂 I’m not necessarily disappointed that the show didn’t get nominated – I guess it was just weird to me to see “Chelsea Lately” on there, since I don’t see any shows on E! as legimate anythings (except for The Soup, but that’s only because I love Joel McHale). But I think you’re right about TCR not really being a “talk show” and instead more of a comedy show. Any time Stephen gets asked what he does for a living, he’ll say that he’s a comedian. And if last night’s episode isn’t an indication of that, then I don’t know what is :P. It doesn’t escape me that the first goal of the show is comedy, but I think I neglect to label it a comedy show sometimes because it’s become so much more versatile to me. Actually, now that I’m thinking of it, I don’t know that I’ve ever called TDS a “talk show” either – it’s my “fake news that’s not really fake because they do a better job of reporting the news than actual news organizations”…show.

I wouldn’t classify TDS as a talk show either, but if you put TDS and TCR in their own category we all know who will win. Jon is just unstoppable.

I would like to know the selection criteria for this, because I can safely say that I would have expected to see Chelsea Handler and Oprah nominated in the same category for anything.

I agree with everything you guys have said. It’ll still be interesting to see if “Stephen” will have anything to say about this if/when he finds out.
